Women of WWI

Women of WWI

Life during WWI

Despite being the world's richest nation, turn-of-the-century Britain excluded women from politics and the workplace. The suffrage movement, led by Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Davison, escalated the fight for the vote with direct action. This struggle is brought to life through this actor-led school workshop, allowing children to actively explore the suffragettes' tactics and dilemmas. This changed dramatically with the outbreak of World War I. As men went to the war front, women stepped into essential roles - including munitions, food production, nursing and espionage - proving their capability and making an undeniable contribution to the war effort.
